Here is an update on Levi's progress. It's been two weeks since her surgery and today she had her staples removed. Her progress was checked by Dr. Melissa Leonhardt DVM and her incision looked great. All the swelling has gone and movement in the leg has greatly improved as has the alignment. The daily physical therapy and ice packs have paid dividends in the healing process. Levi is now beginning to put her leg down touching the ground while standing. She adds a bit more weight each day. When walking fast she still hobbles on three legs, but when walking slow in confined areas she puts her foot down and puts some weight on it. This is excellent progress for just two weeks into an eight to twelve week recovery period. Next visit to Harrison will be in two weeks for x-rays and further assessment of progress, then, again in eight weeks. Dr. Matthew Rooney, who did the surgery on Levi's leg had the opportunity to also assess her progress at this time. He was greatly encouraged. One possible problem looms on the horizon. Levi had extensive work done on her knee or stiffle joint because the leg originally was crooked, out of alignment, and shortened. The joint was stressed and overworked contrary to its intended use. The stretched and shortened muscles had caused some atrophy at the joint. There was also some uneven wear to the bone in this area. Correcting the leg's alignment and length now forces the muscles and joint to work as originally intended. During physical therapy, I have noticed a "popping" in the stifle area. This is the knee cap popping in and out of alignment. We are hoping that further rehap and exercise will strengthen the muscles that help to hold the knee cap in place. If successful we will not have to do further corrective surgery. All in all, Levi has responded very well considering all of the corrective work done to her leg. Her attitude, cooperation, and relatively young age of about three years helps alot. Patience and lots of physical therapy will be necessary. The general consenus of all is that she is definitely worth it. |

| Thanks again to Harrison Memorial Animal Hospital for all the attention, help, and exceptional care that Levi and I have received. To Dr. Matthew Rooney and Dr. Melissa Leonhardt for their skill and efforts, and to Levi's special "Angel" who has volunteered to cover her expenses. Also to Harrison for allowing contributions to be made to help cover Levi's expenses and the expenses of other English rescues receiving the care they so badly need. The professional veterinarian care that we receive at Harrison is extremely appreciated. Andrew MacArthur (acting director at Harrison) and Stephany Klestinec have helped make this all possible. Also Ms. Marty Pease, M.S.P.T. (Animal Rehabilitation) for the help with defining Levi's rehab therapy exercises. |
